Some feel cheated. Some feel ripped off. Others saw the final hour of How I Met Your Mother as a complete let down. I however, believe it was beautiful. This 9 season sitcom became our favorite show through the hilarious characters, long-running jokes, strangely relatable friendships, and that famously addictive story arc. We waited 9 whole years to see what the hell was so damn great about Ted meeting his wife. What we received instead, was a curveball we never expected, and a beautiful depiction of reality.
First and foremost, let’s do a speedy recap how the series left off with each character:
Marshall & Lilly: Our all time favorite couple ended up having a total of 3 children. They eventually moved into a larger apartment-out of the beloved home above Maclarens. Also, Marshall basically becomes state Supreme Justice. perfect perfect perfect, DUH
Barney: Robin&Barney get a divorce just after 3 years due to Robin’s travel demands for her job. (This may be the only criticism I have on the episode: they dragged us through a whole season about their wedding, and spent maybe 5 minutes about the divorce.–I can’t be too mad though. This season wasn’t even supposed to happen. If television wasn’t about money, this finale happening in 2013 would have been flawless) After losing Robin, Barney realizes he will never love someone that way again. He goes back to his womanizing ways, and finally after performing the “perfect month,” he get’s a girl pregnant. It finally happened. When Barney meets his daughter for the first time though, his life changes. The only woman who could really change Barney for the better became his own baby girl.
Robin: After the divorce, Robin went MIA. She travelled the world for her career, as only Robin could. Seeing Ted happy with his wife really hurt her; witnessing the man she could’ve been with. Distancing herself from the gang was the only thing she knew to do.
Ted: All within the last 15 minutes of the episode, we learn how much Ted loved his wife. We ALSO learn after 10 years of marriage, she loses a battle to illness…6 years before telling this story.
“It was at times a long, difficult road. But I’m glad it was long and difficult, because if I hadn’t gone through hell to get there, the lesson might not have been as clear. You see, kids, right from the moment I met your mom I knew, I have to love this women as much as I can and as long as I can and I can never stop loving her, not even for a second. I carried that lesson through every stupid fight we ever had, every 5 a.m. Christmas morning, every sleepy Sunday afternoon, every speed bump, every pang of jealousy or boredom or uncertainty that came our way. I carried that lesson with me.”
Ted’s kids call him out on the entire story- with the questions we have been asking the entire time. “I don’t buy it Dad” …. “Mom is barely even in the story”….“This is the story of about how you’re totally in love with Aunt Robin and you’re thinking about asking her out, and you want to know if we’re okay with it.” “Mom has been gone for 6 years now, it’s time!” The HIMYN series ends with Ted, holding the blue French Horn, on the street outside of Robin’s window.
In a nutshell: The Mother has been dead the whole time. Ted actually ends up with Robin. Ted’s kids are awesome. NOW for the reality check:
Dear HIMYM Fans who feel betrayed,
Let’s TRY to take a different perspective on it all. Throughout those long 9 years, this show was about FRIENDSHIP and the unpredictability of LOVE. These are the 2 most important things in life, and can come in all shapes & sizes. Admit it – HIMYM did not give us that fairytale ending you wanted. It did not give us a sappy, cheesy, comedic ending with a freeze frame of a bunch of friends fake laughing. This ending was REFRESHING, REAL, & quite frankly PERFECT. This is real life. People get divorced. People die. Friends lose touch. BAD THINGS HAPPEN IN LIFE. It’s what happens afterwards and how you handle it that matters. The love of Ted’s life died, but that doesn’t mean he’s not allowed to find happiness again. And who’s better than someone he has loved both romantically in the past, but also as a truly life-long best friend. Tracy (the mother) found love again after her first true love Max passed away. She has now returned to this first love, just as did Ted. It’s likeee a circle of life sortof thangg.
Ted Mosby never gave up on love. He also never settled for anything less than the perfect match who didn’t just tolerated his flaws, but actually kindof liked them. Robin was not Ted’s perfect match, but he never gives up on those who are special in his life. Robin did not fully compliment every aspect about him. There is no doubt in my mind that Tracy was Ted’s true love, and that he loved her more than he ever loved Robin. But life is not a perfect fairytale; bad things happen. Although Ted lost the love of his life, she gave him 2 of the most perfect gifts he could have ever wanted. Ted Mosby was always meant to be the best Dad. After losing Tracy, Ted is allowed to find happiness again. He was lucky enough fall back in love with one of his best friends. The bottom line is, Ted is happy. Ted had a lot of shit happen in his life, but he ALWAYS dug himself out those holes and NEVER gave up on love. Although real life circumstances took his soulmate away from him, he was still able to resurface and find happiness again.
So STFU everybody. Try to learn something from Ted Mosby: 1. Don’t ever give up on love, it’s worth waiting for 2. Don’t let bad things in life keep you down 3. Keep those who are special to you close, forever 4. You can always find happiness again after enduring the darkest of times. Because that’s real life. You have to fight for what you want.
Thank you Ted Mosby. Thank you How I Met Your Mother, for taking a realistic approach on life and giving us 9 years of laughter, tears, and ongoing jokes we will quote for ever.
